Once in a while we get requests to make family recipes for our clients, and once in a while we say yes. Using recipes that we aren’t familiar with have their challenges and sometimes turn out really well and other times, well, not so much. So we’re pretty cautious about when we agree to take on the challenge of making someone else’s recipe work for our clients most precious day.
Kelly emailed us shortly after booking us to make her wedding cake and asked if it would be possible to use her great-grandmother’s lemon pound cake recipe for her cake. Kelly and Ben really wanted their wedding to incorporate as much family tradition as possible. I told her to send it over and I would play around with it to see if it would work. Her cake was a 4 tier with each tier comprised of three layers, so it was going to be heavy and would need to be able to withstand not only the weight, but the Florida heat since the reception was being held on the verandah at Cypress Grove Estate House. After tweaking the recipe slightly and increasing the baking time to create firmer layers, we finally felt comfortable in saying yes we could do it.
Kelly and Ben’s wedding day design was brought to life beautifully by the lovely ladies of Blush by Brandee Gaar, overseeing every last detail to ensure it looked just as Kelly had envisioned. Velvet and Twine were brought on board by Kelly to create a rustic woodland vision which was just absolutely stunning. Greenery swags draped the backs of the French Country chairs brought in by A Chair Affair. The aisle was adorned with urns filled with ferns, magnolia leaves, and pampas grass plumes.
Kelly’s bridesmaids were all on trend with their black one piece jumpsuits, but the real show stopper was Kelly’s lace wedding gown. Her veil was handed down through many generations in her family and matched her gown perfectly.
A combination of farm tables and cloth covered rounds with centerpieces of greenery and ferns greeted guests on the verandah. Dinner was provided by Big City Catering, and of course the wedding cake by us.
We are just in love with how beautiful and rustic the cake looked on it’s own small farm table under the pergola and market lighting!
